ABSTRACTS
This is a gallery showing all my more abstract works. I enjoy
looking at the abstract work of
other artists, particularly Rothko and Mondrian, and have been
experimenting with different styles and media to see what I can come up
with, as I am more used to working from "actual things" than pure
imagination.
Please click on the images below to see a
bigger picture of each artwork - the newest ones are at the top of
the page.

PAPER LEAVES
This
collage was built up from digital scans of an actual leaf shape that I
coloured on the computer then cut out and arranged to form the
picture. The texture of actually making the collage rather than
making a digital artwork really added something extra to this work.

CORRIDOR OF POWER
The
eye is drawn hypnotically to the end of this long corridor, like it has
some kind of power over you. The almost monochrome colouring is
deliberate, reminding me why I don't have an office job any more! |

SCIENCE
A modern take on a Celtic pattern this could be atomic or astronomic, or even a depiction of life itself. |
|
 |
RAINDROP
Capturing that moment just before a drop becomes a splash. |
|
 |
PERSIAN TILE
The
interlocking designs so common in Celtic designs can also be found in
the artwork of other countries. This painting was inspired by a design
on an ancient Persian bowl. |

 |
ARGUS
Named after the watchman giant in Greek mythology who had
a hundred eyes, preserved forever in the peacocks tail. |

|
CELTIC SILVER
I am fascinated by the intricacy of celtic knotwork and
this painting turned out like a silver brooch on raw linen. The shape
fits well on the hexagonal canvas too.

SUMMER STORM
Watching the black clouds advancing over fields yellow
with the flowers of oilseed rape, you know the rain is coming soon.

|
EILEAN DUBH
To translate, 'the black island'. This was one of these
paintings that I didn't know what it was going to be when I started and
the land mass in a sea coloured red by the setting sun just evolved as
I went along.

HEART OF GOLD
An experiment in mixed media work, there are several
different layers of paint on this small canvas, some of which have been
scrubbed back to reveal the colours below. To top it off I went a bit
mad with the glitter...the cat is still covered in sparkly bits.

THE LIGHT
Dawn over Edinburgh and the sun struggles to make itself
seen through the low fog over the Forth.

KEYBORED
One for all computer users out there. So often, while I was working in
various offices, I stared at the Escape key on the keyboard and wished
that it really would let me escape when I pressed it.
