PLANTS & ANIMALS

This gallery shows my favourite subjects for paintings - birds, flowers, plants and animals.  I get a lot of inspiration from the natural world and enjoy the flowing lines and colours.

Please click on the images below to see a bigger picture of each artwork - the newest ones are at the top of the page.

owl mixed media leaf painting

WHO

This is a mixed media painting which is why it's framed behind glass - the owls are painted on actual leaves that I found and loved the shape of. The gold colour makes an eyecatching background too.

Thistle Charity Painting

THISTLE

This was painted as a submission for a great charity auction where all the artworks had to be based on that iconic Scottish image of the thistle.

catch Trout Painting

CATCH OF THE DAY

Is this the one that got away? A beautiful brown trout just ready to hang as a trophy on the wall of any fisherman.

petunia cat statue Painting

PETUNIA

Nestled among the bright petunias, this little cat statue gazes out over the comings and goings on the street.

Prince frog Painting PRINCE

To find a Prince sometimes you have to kiss an awful lot of frogs!

bluetit oval Painting BLUETIT

These colourful birds are always a welcome addition to the garden.

Rapt Osprey Painting RAPT

The ospreys nest every year at Loch Garten near Aviemore and I saw this beautiful raptor giving something rapt attention.

Blue Horse Line Drawing Painting

BLUE HORSE

I try to sketch every morning, and I was really pleased with this sketch of a horse so I transferred it to the computer and added a little colour. I think it looks very classical – Greek or Roman maybe.

high flier sea gull Painting

HIGH FLIER

The grace and menace of gulls wheeling in a bright blue sky.

timrous burns mouse painting

TIM'ROUS

It was around Burns night, hence the title, and I saw this wee face peeking out from under our back fence, looking at the snow and disappearing back to bed. I knew the feeling!.

Bob cat commission Painting

BOBCAT

This was a commissioned portrait of a pet cat. Called Bob. Bob cat. Guess where I got the title from?

Purrl Cat knitting Oval Painting

PURRL

This is Toffee, our oldest cat. I came down one morning to find she had dug out the contents of my knitting bag, which I had placed on the dining room table for safe keeping, and was fast asleep on top of the wool. She looked so cute that I couldn't be angry at her, so I painted her picture instead.

Ivy IV brick wall painting

IV

There is a small patch of ivy growing up the brick wall in our garden. If you think about Roman numerals, the visual joke here is that there are actually five leaves in the painting and not four.

dolphins moray coast Painting

DOLPHINS!

I couldn't visit the Moray coast and NOT be inspired by the fantastic sight of dolphins and porpoises playing in the Moray Firth.

dandelion peacock butterfly Painting

DANDELION AND PEACOCK

A really summery picture inspired by our garden which fills with butterflies (and weeds) in the summer. The title was inspired by that drink from my childhood days called dandelion and burdock

george tortoise painting

GEORGE

George, the box tortoise, lives in my mother's kitchen. Yes, he is real and he's about as old as I am. I'm not saying how old that is though!

Daffodil Painting

DAFFODIL

Spring had sprung and this is the front of a multiple view of that most spring-like flower, painted life size on a small chunky canvas.

Proud Peacock Painting

PROUD

A friend asked me to paint an Indian inspired picture for her. I was stuck for inspiration until I went to Pittencrieff Park in Dunfermline and watched the beautiful peacocks showing off. The triangular canvas gives a modern twist to this most classical bird.

Puffin painting

PUFFIN

My husband is from Orkney and it was there that I got my inspiration for painting this clown of the sea.

Bluebells scottish Painting

BLUEBELLS

The Bluebells of Scotland is a lovely traditional tune which inspired this painting.

Serenity Swan OvalPainting

SERENITY

Swans always look so calm and aloof and this one was gliding over the waters of Loch Lomond. The shape of the swan perfectly suits the oval canvas it was painted on.

Red Bud flower painting

BUD

The canvas was small and chunky and offered an ideal opportunity to paint a flower from many different views – top, bottom, sides and front. This is the front view.

Thistle Bee Scottish Hexagon Painting

THISTLE BEE

So Thistle Bee a really Scottish painting then. I love the colours of the thistle and so, it seems do the 'foggy toddlers'. I carried on the bee theme by echoing the shape of honeycomb in the hexagonal canvas.

Picnic squirrel painting

PICNIC IN THE PARK

I was visiting the Speyside Heather Centre near Aviemore and saw this little guy, bold as you like, sitting on a picnic bench having his lunch.

A NEW DAY

Inspired when I opened the curtains at stupid o'clock one autumn morning and saw Spike the cat, who had been hiding behind the curtains, staring out at the breaking dawn.
